The Institute for Analytical Sciences, with departments in Dortmund and Berlin, is a scientific research establishment jointly supported by the German Federal and States’ Governments. The Institute is governed by the Society for the Advancement of Analytical Sciences e.V., which have three members on the Executive Board. It has been joined contractually with the University of Dortmund since 1993 and is a member of the Leibniz Association. The Institute has gathered particular expertise in developing new methods to solve complex analytical problems and improving existing ones.
ISAS has earned a great international reputation through internal interdisciplinary co-operation between physicists and chemists and externally with engineers, biologists and clinicians. In 2004, ISAS has been re-structured with five project areas: (I) Miniaturisation; (II) Proteomics; (III) Metabolomics; (IV) Material analysis; (V) Interface spectroscopy. The project areas have been established on a limited time basis. They will, however, exist in their current form for a number of years to allow continuity in the research.
The Department of Miniaturisation at ISAS is concerned with the downscaling of existing and the development of novel analytical methods on microstructured chips. The topics are divided in the investigation of miniaturized plasmas, microfluidic separation methods and cell analysis.
