WP4: Microfluidic modules for pre-concentration and separation

The first objective will be the implementation of a module for on-chip pre-concentration of H18F, the starting material for radiosynthesis. This is conventionally done by cation exchange trapping and carbonate-kryptate elution/complexation in organic solvent (objective 1). An alternative (objective 2) will be the pre-concentration on microfluidic chips using micro-capillary electrophoresis (CE). Objectives of WP4 will be also implementation of microfluidic chromatography and free-flow electrophoresis for achieving purification of the final product. These methods will be evaluated to determine the optimum separation conditions in combination with the on-chip synthesis. The availability of various separation techniques will go towards a powerful modular approach in which the chemist can choose the purification technique more suited to his current needs.
